A Tour of Buckingham Palace, The Queen’s House

Buckingham Palace is one of the most iconic buildings in London, and it houses the cities most iconic resident, Queen Elizabeth II! Centrally located in Westminster, Buckingham Palace is one of only a few working royal palaces left in the world. Built in 1703 as he residence for John Sheffield, the 3rd Earl of Mulgrave, the palace became a home for monarchs when George III decided to purchase Buckingham House for his wife, Queen Charlotte on 1761.  19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. The State Rooms are a particular point of interest in that they are lavishly decorated with many beautiful tapestries and works of art, and this is where the queen and her large family receives their subjects and visiting dignitaries.

On your tour, you may encounter the Throne Room which contains the thrones that are used for ceremonial receptions such as royal weddings and  the Queen’s Jubilees

Another highlight of a tour at Buckingham Palace‘ is the Grand Staircase. Designed by the architect John Nash as part of his commission to remodel the palace for King George IV in 1830, the large double staircase is a renowned example of some of the world’s finest bronze casting art. Speaking of art, it is in no short supply at Buckingham Palace. Lining the walls of the royal residents are works from legendary artists  like, Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Poussin and Vermeer. Included amongst these paintings are stately portraits of past and present royals including queen Elizabeth’s Great Grandmother, Queen Victoria, George III and Queen Charlotte, William IV and his wife Queen Adelaide.

Buckingham Palace is a must see for anyone looking to visit London’s Westminster area. Please keep in mind that as a royal residence, the Palace only opens its doors to tours during the summer, so make sure to plan your trip accordingly!
